No-one understood why anyone, let alone someone as well-connected and apparently successful as the blue-blooded Van Doren, would bother cheating on a trivia game show. But, Twenty One had been. Herb Stempel (Twenty One, Winnings $69’500) In a rare turnout for the books, Herb Stempel was asked to cheat by the producers of Twenty One in order to increase its bad ratings. But it got worse from there 6. Herb Stempel, the contestant on NBC's Twenty-One who helped expose the rigged television quiz shows of the 1950s after he was 'defeated' by Charles Van Doren, has died.

Show title[edit]

Is the name of the show Twenty One or Twenty-One? It seems to me that conventions of writing out numbers in American English have always demanded hyphenation, but the word appears the vast majority of the time in this article (including its title) without the hyphen. I think the only way a reader of this article could begin to think it is authoritative would be to have the name of the show punctuated (spelled) consistently throughout. I agree. It's driving me nuts. I'm going to change them all to Twenty One, based on a screen shot. However, the screen shot has 'Twenty' on the first line and 'One' on the second, so it's not a definitive source, but it's the best I can find. Online sources seem to spell it both ways.Kirs10 (talk) 17:14, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

The show title is hyphenated as Twenty-One in The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows 1946–Present, The New York Times[1] and Charles Van Doren's 2008 article in The New Yorker. — WFinch (talk) 11:14, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

The title as broadcast is 'Twenty One', without a hyphen (but on separate lines). That can be seen on kinescopes that are available on YouTube (also shown in part in the PBS American Experience 'The Quiz Show Scandal'). There are 22 occurrences of 'Twenty-One' in the article; if someone knows how to do a mass edit, it should be corrected. BMJ-pdx (talk) 13:53, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

I believe there is an error in the Big Winners section, under Gameplay. It says:

'Under the first payoff structure, Rahim Oberholtzer was the biggest winner, collecting $1,120,000 (at the time, the all-time game show winnings record) over four victories, three of which were due to his opponents striking out.David Legler won $1,765,000 over six wins with the new payout structure. Legler was the top winner of American game shows until 2001 and is now the seventh-highest winner from an American television game show.'

Bolded figure should be '$1,675,000'
